Greetings Brothers and Sisters,
Well, the State Convention is behind us, and I must express my thanks to all the delegates who came and participated. Ardmore, as always, shows us a great time and we had an excellent convention. I am pleased that we raised S1714.00 for Copa, and had a great time doing it! I am also honored to be elected to represent the OPWU at the National Convention, and pledge to do my best.
I would also like to thank OK AFL-CIO President Jimmy Curry and Communications Director Debra Wojtek for giving and update and overview of the activities we have been, and will be involved in this year. As a result of the Teacher Walk Out last month, Oklahoma has more candidates filing for office than ever before. There are only 15 unopposed seats for the House of Representatives (10 Democrats and 5 Republicans). In the Senate, only 4 are unopposed (3 Democrats and 1 Republican). There is a ground swell to become involved, and we must take part also.
On July 21, 2018, the OK AFL-CIO COPE Convention will convene in OKC to vote on which candidates we will support, endorse, and work to elect. If your local is affiliated with the State Federation, you need to have a delegate there to cast your votes. I will be representing the OPWU, let me encourage all affiliated locals to send a delegate. That being said, we will be looking for workers to put feet to the ground. As there will be elections in almost every district, if you are willing and able to help a elect a labor friendly candidate, please contact me and I will help you get connected, for as JFK once said, “If not us, who? If not now, when?” Let us follow the lead of Oklahoma’s educators, and get involved. Now is our time to impact change!
As always, the struggle continues, and we must be at the forefront!
Cynthia McNeilance, OPWU Legislative Director
