Greetings Brothers and Sisters,
As I am sure you are aware, the teachers are on strike for Education funding. As they move into day five, the Senate is scheduled to vote on three bills. Depending on the outcome, the strike may continue into next week. Should that happen, the OPWU is planning a day of Solidarity on Tuesday, April 10. We have the support of the national APWU, and are encouraging all APWU members, families and friends to come and stand with the teachers unions (OEA and AFT) in solidarity. The teachers were instrumental in supporting the APWU in our Stop Staples campaign by boycotting Staples (considering how many supplies they purchase on their own, it definitely had impact) and now it is our turn to repay the favor and have their back.
Ashley Cargill and I have been coordinating with National in the “Fight Today for a Better Tomorrow” and we will be at the Capital from 9am until approximately 3pm. We will then move to the streets to welcome and encourage the Tulsa Teachers walking to OKC. They are expected to arrive around 4pm. We ask that you come for as long as you can, but understand that you may be coming from work or have to report afterwards, and that some of you will be traveling a great distance. We will have a sign in sheet so that we have an accurate count of participants, and correct spelling of your names for pictures which we will send to national. After the event we will have a drawing and four lucky winners will receive a $25 gift card.
We are hoping to have signs, banners and stickers printed to pass out at the Rally, but you are welcome to make your own if you wish. It would also be appreciated if you would wear an APWU shirt if you have one so that we are easily recognized (if you have extras and don’t mind loaning them to others please bring them). We are also hoping to pass out refreshments to the teachers.
Currently, the Teamsters are running a shuttle from the AFL-CIO office to the Capital from 8:45am until 3:00pm. I am expecting they will be doing so next week also, but if not, it is a 5 minute walk to the Capital from the AFL-CIO office. I would encourage parking on their South parking lot, as Capital parking is expected to be full. The AFL-CIO address is 501 N.E. 27th St, OKC, OK 73105.
You may contact OPWU State President, Ashley Cargill at (405) 371-2473 or email at email@example.com. You may reach me, Cynthia McNeilance, at (918) 724-0787 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please put our numbers in your phone so we can connect when you arrive at the Capital. Lastly, let me thank you in advance for your activism and belief in the labor movement as we make history and put Oklahoma back on the right track, where “Labor Omnia Vincit”!
